Spotlight On: Resources for Local Governments

A Conversation with Tracey Gordy

Keeping track of all of the local, regional, and state resources for planning and environmental protection can be hard. At the same time, Maryland state residents rate the environment as the factor most important for a high quality of life in our communities, state-wide. To make sure plans and procedures are best informed, consider visiting A Better Maryland, the Maryland Department of Planning’s website; the Reinvest Maryland toolkit; and the Department of Planning’s Models and Guidelines Archives.

These resources were suggested to us via a conversation Envision the Choptank recently had with Tracey Gordy, the Senior Regional Planner for the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. Her team provides planning, zoning, and technical assistance to municipalities for free when asked by elected officials or local governments. Tracey and her colleagues can provide assistance with writing and administering grants, and help with research, ordinance development, and grant funding opportunities.

Ms. Gordy suggests exploring the “Toolbox” tab of the Reinvest Maryland toolkit to find assistance and collaborators for projects. She also mentions that while some of the resources from the Department of Planning’s Models and Guidelines Archives page may be slightly outdated, for smaller towns and municipalities the guidelines they offer may still be helpful.
