Since 2018, Envision the Choptank has been working with the town of Easton to help restore Tanyard Branch and Papermill Branch streams. The project will restore over 2,000 linear feet across the two urban streams while helping to reduce flooding, improve water quality and habitat, and connect surrounding communities to restoration efforts.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and town of Easton staff have been working with Easton Middle School to engage students and teachers in the project. Together, they have developed a student science initiative to monitor stream health before, during, and after restoration, and bring students to participate in restoration planting.
In 2019, the team supported staff training for sixth-grade teachers involved in the initiative as well as a training session for all sixth-grade students, and the first round of stream sampling. The restoration is scheduled to be completed in 2021. NOAA provided funding for the design of the project through Envision the Choptank and Maryland DNR recently awarded the town of Easton a Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund grant for the restoration phase.
